When you have love on your side, not even the devil can touch you (part 1)
It was the middle of the night; the snow was dancing ferociously, mimicking my heartbeat. It was white all over and we were like two shadows in the middle of the falling snow. I gave him a short kiss and said goodbye. He held my hand and pulled me close to his chest, a tear rolled down my eye. I tried to free myself but he held on tight.
“I love you so much, I think about you all the time” I said to him
“Then why do you want to run away from me?” he asked
“Please let me go” I said with tears rolling down my cheeks
“No, I need answers. I will not let you go” he said
“I can only tell you that I love you and only you. Please let me go now” I begged
“I can help you. Please let me.” he said with tears in his eyes
“I have to do this alone. Remember me fondly” I said with all the courage I had left in me and ran away as fast as I could. He quickly got hold of me and forced me to sit on the bench nearby and tell him everything.
“I got myself in some deep trouble. I can’t involve you and ruin your life as well. Please, that’s all I can tell you”
“I will not let you go if you don’t tell me” he insisted
“There has been an incident and I can’t involve you in it. It’s too much to handle for anyone” I said
“Will you tell me already” he said holding my hands tightly
“Ok, listen. There was a man, he came to my house. He wanted help; he had lost his phone and his car had crashed nearby. I let him in thinking he’s a good person in need of shelter…”
“Then what happened?”
“…After he freshened up. I made coffee for him and he attacked me from behind and in trying to save myself I hit him on the head” I said crying so hard he could barely make out my words
“Slowly darling. Tell me a little more” he said hugging me
He came into the kitchen and held me from behind. He grabbed me from the waist and put one hand on my mouth. I got so scared that I hit him with the coffee pan on the gas. Spilled hot coffee all over him and he felt unconscious. Before I could realise what had happened my lights went out” I sighed
“Then what did you do?”
“I quickly lit a candle and wrapped his body in a bedsheet and put him in the trunk of my car. I drove for about 45 minutes to find a desolate road but then I saw a police car nearby…”
“Oh my God. Did they ask something?” he swiftly asked
“Yes, one of my tail lights was out. They enquired about that”
“Also, they wanted to know what I was doing out on such a snowy night”
“Did they suspect anything?”
“Come here my darling. I’m with you now” he said hugging my body in his masculine arms.
“When did this happen?” he asked
“When you were in Chicago. About 15 days back” I answered
“You have been holding this in for such a long time. You should’ve told me this earlier my love”
We decided to leave town for a few days. We relaxed for a while at a bed & breakfast in Amana Valleys. When we came back to the house, there was eerie silence. My house never felt this quiet before. Everything seemed normal, everyone around also looked fine. It was two days later, that a policeman came by and asked a few questions. He told me about the guy. His name was ‘Ankur Chawla’ and his car had been seen in the neighborhood. They wanted to know if I had seen him around and very conveniently I refused. I called Rajat that very moment and told him about the policeman.
He came home as soon as he could and caught hold of me packing my stuff. I was freaking out and planning to run as fast as I could. He explained that if I did that I wouldn’t be able to live with myself for long. I needed to face the music and that had to happen now.
The next day, another incident took place. In my mail, I received an anonymous letter saying – ‘I know you are guilty’. That put me over the edge. Not even the cool and calm Rajat could handle me. I had reached the airport and just about to board the flight when Rajat called and I somehow answered his call. He convinced me to stay and promised me that we would get to the bottom of this and soon!
About three days later, I received another note saying – ‘I’m going to get you’. Rajat got furious and blasted at the top of his voice. I cooled him down and we decided to take the matter in our own hands. We would not get dictated by someone else. We decided to investigate the case on our own.
First thing on the agenda was to find out about the guy who was murdered here. We already knew his name ‘Ankur Chawla’. Its crazy the amount of people you find here from your country. I came here to study and decided to settle down. Luckily, I found Rajat whom I could always count on. Not many people get the chance to meet such genuine people.
We found out that he was a pharmacist and had his own pharmacy in the city. He was married and separated from his wife and was battling to keep his house and car. He was obviously deep in the water. Next thing we did was to take out his phone records and credit card bills, which was a tough one but Rajat somehow managed to get them from the guy’s house. We almost got caught because of it but made it out just in time.
He had recently placed an order to restock the medicines and one thing that popped out was the quantity of chloroform. What was he into? Was he planning something dangerous? Nobody except him had the answers to that.
