When God steps in, miracles happen (part 1)…
“Have you seen him today? He looks dull” said nurse Soumya
“Yeah, looks pale. I hope he gets well after the surgery in a few hours” replied nurse Cincy.
“What are you two gossiping about?” asked nurse Preeti
“We were talking about that handsome guy in ward 10. So attractive and to be in a hospital” sighed nurse Soumya
“Looks like somebody has a crush” laughed nurse Preeti
“Oh, shut up. I just like looking at him. He makes my day go well, that’s all” blushed nurse Soumya.
“Back to work now” said nurse Cincy
The patient in ward 10, Naveen, was severely ill because of a heart condition and the doctors gave him a 10% chance to live. They had tried every procedure they could but somehow his heart failed to function properly. His only hope was a bypass surgery which could go either way. But this was not the condition a year ago.
“What happened to papa, is he going to be alright ma?” asked 11-year-old Reyaansh.
“He’s going to be alright baby” sighed Aditi. Her heartbeat racing at 120 beats per minute. She couldn’t wait for her husband’s reports to be uploaded online.
Aditi’s husband, Naveen, had not been keeping well for about a month now. Being the caring mother and wife that she is, told Naveen to get all his blood tests done. She was biting her nails waiting for his reports. As soon as the reports were uploaded on the website, she downloaded them and took a print of it.
In the evening, both of them discussed about going to the doctor the following week. The reports were disturbing which was surprising because they had a very healthy lifestyle. Exercise, healthy eating, no drinking, no smoking. They had two kids, Reyaansh, 11 years and Viraj, 14 years old. Naveen had his own CA practice and Aditi helped him out time to time (she being a qualified CA herself, took a sabbatical from regular work after the kids were born).
The next morning, they went to see doctor Mahesh – a cardiologist. He wanted Naveen to do more tests. A week later, after all the tests had been done, they again went to see the doctor.
“I’m afraid it’s not good. Tell me something, do you smoke? How’s your sugar? Do you have stress at work these days?” asked the doctor
“I don’t smoke, sugars are a little high and yes, I have been stressed lately at work. But what does that have to do with my reports?” asked Naveen
“Your condition is called arrhythmia, more specifically, tachycardia” he explained
“What does that mean doctor, can you please explain” asked Aditi
“Yes, it means that you have irregular heartbeat. Tachycardia is when the heart beats faster than normal. Have you ever felt dizziness, fluttering in chest, lightheaded, weakness?”
“Once, I got dizzy suddenly in office. That’s about it” recalled Naveen
“That’s ok. You can’t feel the symptoms sometimes. I want to start you on medication. I think we can control it” elucidated the doctor
“Is he going to be alright doctor? I’m so worried about him” asked a worried Aditi
“These medicines should make him feel better. We’ll see you after a month.” he said
Naveen and Aditi were pretty shaken up and decided not to tell their kids. Naveen was taking his medicines on time and never missed a dose. About 10 days later, he started feeling dizzy and nauseated. He immediately called Aditi and she consulted the doctor. He said it could be the effect of the medicines and they shouldn’t worry about it. But it didn’t go away, he had a constant feeling of nausea through out the mornings. They went to the doctor for a check up and he changed his medication, said the earlier medicine did not suit him and was causing the nausea. After that, he felt ok.
At the monthly check up, Naveen complained about weakness in his body. The doctor said, it could be because he was thinking too much.
“You are worrying too much and its taking a toll on your body. My suggestion is that you start going for morning walks and keep your days stress free. It is highly important for you to keep yourself relaxed” enlightened doctor Mahesh.
They agreed and did exactly as the doctor had advised them. Both of them started going for a walk in the morning and Aditi started helping him out in his work so that he is stress free. Things were good for a while but Naveen started feeling sick again. After the check-up, the doctor didn’t look satisfied.
“What’s the matter doctor?” asked Aditi with a concerned look
“I’m afraid it’s bad news” he said with a sigh
“Tell us doctor. We can take it” said Aditi holding tightly onto Naveen’s hand
“The condition has deteriorated and we need to act fast. The medicines have not worked as well as I had hoped” he elucidated.
They both held their hand tightly and fixed a date for the procedure which was two days from now. Aditi was pacing up and down the hall of the waiting room. She was sweating profusely and kept looking at the door for any update on Naveen. She knew it was a delicate procedure of placing catheters in the areas of the heart to destroy the affected tissue. An hour later, the doctor came out and told her that Naveen was resting and the procedure was a success.
A few minutes later, she went to meet him in the recovery area. She let out a massive sigh. She could breathe again. He was feeling alright.
They say that when something has to go wrong it just does. Naveen had fallen sick again. This was 3 months after he went through the catheter procedure. Aditi was feeling so under the weather that she didn’t want to get out from the bed. It was not that she was feeling sick, it was the fact that Naveen just didn’t seem to get better. She was feeling frustrated and low, she had swollen eyes and a grumpy face.
They even fought on little things and Aditi decided to take a break from all the bickering. She went to her parents’ place for 2-3 days leaving Naveen with his elder sister.
