A short story

The disembodied voice said to take cover but he didn’t know where to go. He was scared and frantic. His mind had stopped working. He had seen so much blood that he had never seen in his life. There were bodies everywhere, lifeless and just thrown away like garbage. James didn’t think he would make it alive out of this battlefield. He would not see his family again, his wife and his new born son. But something about that disembodied voice had assured him that he would see them again. The possibility of seeing his family again gave him courage to fight, to get out of here alive and see his son grow up in front of him. He started firing and move ahead to make his way home. There were hardly any people left alive on that battlefield but the enemy camp was strong. They were still firing and taking hostage anyone who was alive. It was a difficult time. Wars were going on all over the world. James found an opening and he took it quickly, it was his only chance to get out of there without being seen by the enemy. He just ran till he was out of breath. He looked back and all he could see was little blobs of bodies. He was on a road, looking for a car who would take him to his base camp. He reached his base camp late at night, nobody expected him but they were delighted to see at least one of their men had made it alive. James contacted his family and told them that he would come home soon. It would be difficult for James to come out of this experience. He would remember this for the rest of his life.
