Love doesn’t hurt, expectations do (concluding part)
…Continued from here
There she was in a blue silver sari with exquisite jewelry, her hair was open and tied with a single pin at the back. She was looking stunning and I just couldn’t control myself so I went up to her.
“Hey, you look gorgeous” I said
“Thanks” she said and took her eyes away from me but I kept looking at her.
“Hey Chetna, where have you been, haven’t seen you all day?” asked one of her friends
“Wasn’t feeling well, so I slept throughout the day” she said
“What happened to you?” I quickly jumped in and asked her
“Nothing much Raghav” she snubbed.
“What’s the matter with you?” I asked
“Not here, not right now. We will talk later” she said
“No, right here right now” I said grabbing her hand
I took her away from the wedding lawn. She resisted a little but stopped because if she made a fuss everybody would see what was going on, so quietly she came with me.
“Please tell me what is the matter, why aren’t you talking to me or even refusing to acknowledge me?” I asked
“Ok I will tell you everything but just be patient it might be a lot to take in” she said
“I have a sister named Anamika…” she said
“I know that, what does she have to do with us?” I asked
“I’m Anamika, I am the one who was in love with you in college” she continued
“What? No it was Chetna who was in love with me” I said
“Listen carefully Raghav. Chetna and I wanted to be in the same college but we didn’t get the admission in the same university. Chetna, being the elder one, could get into the Bengaluru University; I had to go to Mumbai to study. Time to time she used to visit me in Mumbai and meet all of my friends and we used to have a blast. She was always fascinated with Mumbai; she always wanted to live there.
So, one fine day she suggested that we switch places and being a twin nobody would know who’s who. And also, our courses were same so we wouldn’t have a problem catching up. Before switching places she made me see all of her friends’ photos including yours and told me everything there was to know. And we did, we switched places and till date nobody knows what we did.
When I came here I didn’t know anybody but slowly I got to know you and we grew closer and closer each day, I was head over heels in love with you. Chetna said we need to switch back once in a while and we did. I couldn’t stay away from you so I came back without telling her. It was the end of term and all of us got placed in different parts of the country, you and I were also would’ve been in different cities. I might have come and stayed with you but you wanted so much more with your life, you wanted to travel and work and enjoy life, I didn’t want to come in between all of that so with a very heavy heart I asked Chetna to break up with you. I couldn’t do it myself.
“When I saw you in the airplane I couldn’t believe I was standing in front of you so I just nodded and walked past you. Again when we met, I told you I didn’t recognize you because it was easier that way, I was safe I didn’t have to look at you and remember the old times.” She concluded.
“You never told me anything, you could’ve talked to me about this. You took a decision about both our lives on your own. Who are you to decide what I want and don’t want; I wanted to be with you so badly, I wanted to marry you right after college, I even bought a ring to surprise you but you never gave me a chance, you broke my heart” I said angrily and went away.
“Raghav wait, my love please let me explain” she called after me.
“There is nothing to explain” I said from a distance and went up to my room crying myself to sleep.
The very next day at breakfast she tried talking to me again and this time it was I who didn’t talk to her, I felt terrible but I just couldn’t talk to her or even look at her the same way as I used to before.
After breakfast it was time to leave and I didn’t want to go before meeting her; whatever was in mind I had to tell her.
“Hey Chetna, no I mean Anamika, may I have a word with you?” I asked her
“Yes, please talk to me” she said
“Listen, I’m glad you told me everything, but you could’ve spared both of us the pain we went through. I need some time to think things through; we can’t be together right now. I’m sorry but you can’t bomb this on me and expect me to be okay with all of this. I wish you all the best for your life and wish you well. Goodbye Anamika” I said and sighed. Shook her hand and sat in the car.
“Raghav, you can’t do this, please listen to me, don’t go away from me again, I will not be able to live without you” she said holding my hand
“I’m sorry” that’s all I could manage with a heavy heart.
“We will meet again Raghav and we will be together maybe not today but someday and we will have a great life together” she said and left my hand.
I went my way and she hers. Maybe she’s right; maybe we will be together someday but not today, definitely not today.
