Life is a dream for the wise and a game for the fool… (Part 1)
The light was excruciating to my eyes. With my eyes down I walked towards my car.
“Hey dad, hands up” said Markus with his toy gun aimed at me.
“Son, please switch off the light (of the gun). It’s hurting my eyes” I said.
“Dad, come play with me, it’s so much fun. I love my new toy gun” Markus said excitedly.
“Come on, let’s go inside. It’s not safe for you to play out here in the dark.” I said
“10 more minutes please”
“Ok, but that’s it, your mom will start worrying.” I said
“Oh wait, why don’t you come with me, we’ll have fun, I am going out to run some errands” I said
“Yayy!! Let’s go dad” he said excitedly.
So we sat in the car and drove out to the market. We quickly bought milk and bread and headed home but not before Markus had an ice cream and a lot of candy. It was hard to stop him. He was just so adorable with ice cream dripping from his face and candy stuffed in his mouth. He had a lot of fun along the way. Had his head out the window and was screaming on top of his voice, a full sugar rush.
I knew my wife would be really mad but it was holiday time and he is entitled to freak out once in a while.
We reached home right in time for dinner. My wife was setting the table for the three of us.
“Go wash up for dinner” I told Markus.
“Dad, I’m not hungry anymore.” He said jumping up and down
“Come and sit with us. You clearly need to calm down” I told him
“What have you done with our son?” my wife asked me jokingly.
“He just has a sugar rush, he will be fine” I said and we both laughed.
After dinner we retired for the night. Very difficult to put Markus to bed, we literally had to pin him down.
Knock knock, Knock knock, Knock knock
There was a tap on the door. Who could that be in the middle of the night? I got out of bed grumpily, down the stairs and asked before opening the door – “Who is it?”
“It’s me buddy, your friend Jim” said the voice.
I opened the door and let him in.
“What are you doing here? Do you know what time it is?” I asked him rubbing my eyes.
“I know, I’m sorry to barge in like this but I need your help.” He said.
“Sure buddy, tell me how can I help?”
“Why are you trembling? What’s the matter?” I asked very concerned
“I got into some trouble last week and I have been on the run ever since. They want something from me, but it’s not complete yet. I can’t help anyone right now” he explained.
“What do they want from you? And who are they? Who are you involved with?” I asked.
“You know I have been working on my project for many years now. Well, I had a breakthrough a few days ago. I proved that you can be in two places at one time, which means I can be here talking to you and at home at the same time.” He explained.
“What? How can that be? That’s just impossible.” I exclaimed.
“Technically, you can’t. But I have developed a formula which makes the person able to be in two places at once” he said.
“Ok, so who is after you? And how do they know what you were working on?” I asked.
“There is a local gang of thieves in our area. Till now they just robbed houses and mom n pop shops. But somehow they got whiff of my experiment and have threatened to kill me if I don’t hand over the formula.” He said.
“Now, I have proved this on paper, but am yet to do it in reality. I don’t know what to do now. They won’t listen to me. My time limit to give them the formula is tonight. Help me please.” He pleaded.
“Do you have a number where you can contact them? Maybe we can try and get some more time.” I asked.
“They always call from a protected number, so I don’t know which number to call them on. They only call me” he said.
“When was the last time you heard from them?” I asked.
“Two days back, but they will definitely call today” he said.
“So, when they call just try and convince them for more time. Meanwhile we can go to the police and seek help from them” I said
“If they get to know they will kill me for sure”
“They will not because I will go and you stay here” I said.
“Are you sure you want to take this risk for me? I mean this is a big risk and your life will be on the line” he asked.
“Yes, I’m sure. I will take care of this” I said reassuringly.
After that we went to bed. Jim slept in the guest bedroom. It was a long day ahead of us and we both needed the rest.
